ABORIGINAL ARTS ORGANISATIONS CAPACITY BUILDING

Client: Arts NSW, 2014

In consultation with Arts NSW officers, David Fishel as Director of Positive Solutions has designed a professional development program to support capacity-building at management and board level within selected NSW Aboriginal Arts Organisations. The overall objective is to strengthen the positioning of these organisations within a competitive funding environment, and to leave a legacy of more effective organisational governance and leadership.

The independent review undertaken for QSO provided a valuable insight for our Board and CE to improve our existing governance, succession planning and corporate framework. The presentation of the findings of the review by BoardConnect was insightful and enabled an achievable implementation plan to be developed.

I certainly would recommend BoardConnect as their structured approach gives confidence that opportunities for change are identified and implemented. We have already implemented a number of initiatives for the review which will make QSO even a finer orchestra.

BoardConnect was engaged to undertake a board and governance review for the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

BoardConnect ensured that they had a close familiarity and understanding of the organisation’s objectives and work. Their plan included the following steps:

  • Initial briefing with Chair and CEO
  • Review of board documentation
  • Board self-assessment survey
  • Individual interviews with board members, CEO
  • Draft report and recommendations
  • Revised report
  • Presentation and final discussion
The final report contains a summary of findings from the online survey which board members completed, a summary of issues raised during individual interviews with board members, and comment from the consultant on board documentation.

At a meeting on 20th July the consultant facilitated discussion of elements of this report, and steered the board to agree priorities for enhancing board effectiveness. A set of recommendations and an action plan was subsequently provided to the Chairman.

Muscular Dystrophy Queensland is on a journey of very significant change aimed at strengthening structure, governance, efficiency, and provision of services to our clients that they want and need. It was the first board review for some years and the BoardConnect consultant managed the project in a very professional and low stress manner. Our Board was very receptive to BoardConnect’s recommendations and made several positive changes as a result. BoardConnect made the process look easy when it could have been quite stressful and prolonged.

Working with David Fishel from BoardConnect was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. He offers a considered and thoughtful process to information gathering. He listens and is enthusiastic to learn about the business and what it does. BoardConnect is clearly very experienced about what can be appropriate actions to strengthen governance arrangements and these are provided in a written form which is easy to understand and capable of much ‘value add’.

We would be very comfortable approaching BoardConnect for further services based on their engaged and professional way of working which takes into account the size of the organisation they are advising that results in in practical outcomes.

BoardConnect was engaged to undertake a governance and operation review, to include the following elements:

  • Review the current governance arrangements of the PCT
  • Evaluate the performance, capacity and culture of the Board
  • Evaluate the performance, capacity and culture of the Organisation’s operational delivery team
  • Evaluate perceptions of sponsor
  • Make recommendations to improve the PCT governance and operational arrangements
During the initial briefing it was agreed that the primary focus of the operation review should be on the interaction between staff and board, and the underpinning systems that influence governance performance. Phone interviews took place with a small number of external stakeholders.

The board survey was completed by all but one board member. A full analysis of the Board Survey was provided including a summary of key issues arising from the survey, and from the interviews with board and staff members.
