About the Speakers:

David Fishel is Co-Director of Positive Solutions, founder of BoardConnect and author of The Book of the Board.

David has delivered training in board development, management and leadership skills, arts-business partnerships and strategic planning. He has provided consulting services and governance advice for non-profit organisations, government agencies and private sector organisations, working in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, UK, India, South East Asia and North Asia.

The Book of the Board has become the standard reference book for board and committee members of non-profit organisations in Australia (published by Federation Press) and Boards That Work by the Directory of Social Change in the UK. David is a graduate of Liverpool, Newcastle and Oxford Universities. He has been a board member of several cultural and educational organisations and Chair of three including, most recently, Brisbane Writers Festival.

In 2010 David founded BoardConnect, a non-profit firm dedicated to providing support and advice to the board members of non-profit organisations, and the CEOs who serve them.

Heather Watson is a Non Executive Director and Consultant Lawyer at McCullough Robertson Lawyers specialising in the non-profit sector.  Heather has acted for and been a member of many community and charitable organisations and served as a board member at BoardConnect for five years.  Her expertise covers aged care, health and community services, affordable housing and indigenous communities.

Heather focuses on establishing and restructuring legal and tax entities for charitable and non-profit organisations, advising boards on risk and governance related issues and establishing charitable foundations.

As the role of government in the funding and delivery of human services is changing, this has led to an even greater demand for Heather’s high-level strategic advice.

Heather’s current directorships include:

  • Chair, Uniting in NSW.ACT
  • Chair, Community Services Industry Alliance Ltd
  • Chair, Epic Good Foundation
  • Director, Uniting in VIC.TAS
  • Director, Australian Regional and Remote Community Services Ltd
  • Director, National Affordable Housing Consortium Ltd
  • Director, SEFA Partnerships Ltd
  • Advisory Board Member, Australian Charities and Not for Profit Commission
  • Advisory Council Member, Queensland Family and Child Commission

Effective non-profit leadership has a lot to do with getting the balance right in the boardroom.  This means having the right mix of skills and experience, and ensuring directors are operating as a cohesive team to drive organisational performance.

This workshop will explore how to develop and execute a succession plan, establish essential recruitment and induction processes, strengthen board performance, and implement best governance practices for leadership that can evolve alongside your organisation.
